Defeat your enemies with kindness.
This character development for Gigi was pretty much planned from the very moment I had her join the Adventure Squad as a spy. And the only reason I did that was because I didn't really know what to do with her, and her original appearance as "the one in Talzo's group that got left behind at their base" didn't really leave much interest or screen-time.
Since Gigi was, well, Gigi's character from winning the second art contest way back in 2011, I felt the character deserved to be used more than that. Shame I never thought the same about Satomi, but oh well. It's far too late to fix that problem. Anyways, I developed a completely original characterization to befit this new spy Gigi idea that I had.
The characterization of a grumpy, no-nonsense character ended up working extremely well with the characters I put her up against: Ryka and Neona, both of whom got additional characterization because of Gigi. Ryka became the more excitable, fun-loving naive (and soda-obsessed) character she is now because of the desire to put her up directly as Gigi's foil. Gigi, the character who is not to be trusted, meets Ryka, the one who automatically trusts and 'befriends' her. Ryka's original appearances in Meet the KAS laid a groundwork, but it definitely wasn't the same as what she ended up becoming. Neona, on the other hand, was basically nothing before Division Addition. She had a few minor appearances here and there, but nothing that actually, y'know, gave her character. With Division Addition, she became a snarky in-between. She has a mixture of Gigi's sarcasm and slyness with Ryka's optimism and supportiveness. She plays around, but all in good fun, and is more straightforward.
The three way dynamic here became the cornerstone of Division Addition, far more than the segment's original intent to merely "Meet the KAS" with the side characters. I was able to set up that Neona and Gigi became amicable towards each other by the end, and Ryka was just enamored with the idea of spending time with Gigi. I also hinted, however subtly, that Gigi wasn't as bad as she could be made out to be initially as just a spy. She's cheeky when stopping Spinni using an electrifying invisible mirror barrier (which we just saw for the second time recently, hence why I tried to give Neon a knowing reaction to it!) and she goes out of her way to advise Spinni against being alone when there's no reason to.
While it was originally meant as a way to try and set up the Squeak Squad being together when I did the Mass Attack story (something that really didn't even need to happen anyway but whatever), I realized I could use that as part of Gigi's development. She got left behind in that first Talzo attack, I recalled. With this, I could give her the traits that she wanted to be more than just the one left behind, the ace in the hole. She was lonely, basically, and while Talzo treated her alright, even back in Jetting Across the Ice, it was all business first. She advises Spinni against loneliness, and I was able to spin this into because she knew loneliness personally.
Of course, this is where Ryka came in. Her especially became almost obsessed with spending time with Gigi, and I threw it in basically whenever I could. I even think it became so prominent that, if I recall correctly, BattleStarX even had her mention it back during his side of the Lessons Learned crossover. I think. It's been a while. Either way, the two had become a pair, much to Gigi's chagrin. All of this was, at this point obviously, to set up the idea that Gigi would find herself more and more willing to go along with Ryka. I even hinted at this back in Division Addition with a punchline: "I shudder to think that I may someday get used to them." Or something like that. Again, it's been a while. Almost 4 years at this point!
One thing that has changed primarily about this, though, is that Keito was never meant to die, and Dark Matter was never meant to show up here. Both of these whim ideas threw any previous plan I had out of whack here even if I hadn't previously decided to revamp all my plans during the hiatus.
In the end, the primary thing that this really changed was speeding up the timetable. There was planned to be a lot more background development showing Gigi slowly and slowly becoming more accustomed to Ryka, as we even see begins to form in the start of Infiltration where she feels like she'd be guilty if Ryka gets hurt, and tries to tell herself that it wouldn't be her fault. She's in denial at this point that she's Ryka's friend, and this would've been a much more reasonable change for her until Keito's death shocked that out of her system.
With one person she considered at least a working acquaintance, and is shown in JATI to be able to hold a decent conversation with him (though this was before Zykan actually became Zykan), outright murdering someone she had also come to know (at the very least, they had talked once or twice on-panel), it forced her to evaluate her priorities. Guilt was eating at her, so she forced herself to confess so that she could still have a chance at recovering the friendships that she finally began to admit she had made.
If I could do this over again, Gigi and Ryka's dynamic would have been included much earlier and had more appearances, but in the end, I think this is overall a good conclusion to this developmental arc. At least, as good as I could do with this sped up timetable and new pseudo-improvisational plan.
Next time for the many mid-chapter story development talks that are going to be occurring, we talk Division C. See you then.

Wow, a long comment that isn't at the end of a segment.
I shudder to think of the length of the final author's comment.

Gigi's a great character in this, I'm glad she has an actual personality and I'm glad you did this with her. She has morals, she has priorities, she has friends, shes an all around interesting character. Thanks for that Ulti!DarkNut255,

Honestly, I'm glad to see these three have a relatively happy end (as far as we know, at least), and that they were all able to develop so much as characters. Now I'm curious as to what going to happen with Aika, Nameless, and Wake.ForestFire,
