Well, for now, this segment is at a close. See this cliffhanger here? To be continued... in the next segment! Heh.
Either way, Such An Odd Eight is complete now! And what better way to end it out by giving a big long wordy thingamabob that people like to read for whatever reason! SO GET READY!
The idea of a crossover with 20 Times Kirby was almost a given after From Dream Adventures took place. It was pretty much inevitable, the only questions were when and how.
The when almost became a problem, because it was mostly Gigi who chose when the segment would occur. I had originally wanted the crossover to take place as the second segment of chapter 4 (we're still in chapter 3 by the way), and the segment that begins next update was going to be the segment that was after Division Addition. Either way, though, I'm happy with how this whole thing turned out.
One thing I tried to do differently with this crossover as compared to the KDA one, was pacing. See, the issue I have with From Dream Adventures is its accessibility. Sure, people who read both comics can get it just fine. But the problem arose with the fans who weren't into Kirby's Dream Adventure. I introduced six new characters at once and treated them as if everybody already knew who they were. This unfortunately hurt that crossover in the fact that not as many people were able to enjoy it.
With Such An Odd Eight, the way I tried to make it accessible to both fans of 20xK and people who don't read 20xK was how the characters were introduced. As opposed to all at once, I brought up each character one by one, and had the plot of the segment be to round them all up. That way, newcomers could actually manage to get an idea for who a character was a little before meeting a new one, instead of getting everyone confused and such.
The first four comics in this segment were simply setting the stage. The machine that caused the dimension-jumping was in the 20 Times Kirby universe, so I had to think of something to have my Kirbies do. The idea to have them race in Pumpkin Grand both gave me the way to use that location again, and get the five Kirbies in a remote location away from the others.
Then I got to experiment with special effects in part 4.
The introduction of Dana was quite a fun one to write for. I don't actually remember why I made Dana be the first Kirby that Keito and the gang discovered, but it made for some funny moments. I found Dana fairly easy to write for, since her character's not that hard to understand.
As a side note, I like the idea of Go Fish Gods.
Gigi brought up in her own writing comment thingymajagger that Dana calmed down much faster than expected. I only did this because, really, it would get old very quickly if she kept freaking out constantly. I needed her to calm down so my Kirbies could get some sense of what was going on, and that made her subsequent freak-outs funnier due to how it wasn't how she was acting the entire time so far.
Part 7 is by far one of the most rushed comics I've ever made, and I blame this on my stubbornness. I had become rather fond of the simpler 4-panel comics, and I became very unwilling to break away from these 4-panelers until later this segment. Unfortunately, this made part 7 suffer due to how much I tried to cram into it. Having someone answer Dana's question, having Keito react to Gigi's last comment, stuff like that would've made that comic a lot better.
Matt was the next Kirby I introduced, and I swear, I kept thinking that one of the Kirbies that got sent over was Tim, Gigi's Kirby with the Wheel ability. I'm not sure why, but I just did. This was one of probably 3 times I tried to put Tim in but then later realized I didn't have Tim in my comic.
I didn't really have a great idea of Matt's personality, but I did the best I could. Since to me, one of his most memorable factors was his love of racing, I sort of wrote him as being obsessed with racing, thus his constant mentioning of them. The waffles thing just came because I wanted a joke and didn't know what else to do, so I put my brain on autopilot. It also let me start using more closeups, as was suggested by Torkirby through Skype.
If I had to redo anything about Part 13, I would have Keito be the one to comment about only missing 6, so Vezo didn't say the line then make fun of himself. It works much better that way, and I'm sad I didn't think of that in the first place.
Vaina is a character I want to expand on, but I always have trouble writing her into any segments. The crossover idea allowed me to place her in without it seeming awkward, and I'm glad for that. Also, the post office is Trial Room 1 from the Dyna Blade subgame.
Clare was a lot of fun to write for, considering how much energy she has. She's essentially a dumb-mode Caiya with the ability to form coherent sentences. Since I'm already well acquainted with Caiya, Clare became rather easy to write for. I did so well that apparently Gigi herself thinks I did perfectly.
I still need to fix my misspelling of Caio in part 16.
The idea of Clare and Leo becoming dark-colored and more powerful wasn't really fully explained well enough, I feel, so here goes. Basically, when Caiya and Kaxo (not-Kaxo?) went through the dimensions, their powers combined with Clare and Leo. Since Caiya and Clare both have Ice abilities and Kaxo and Leo both have Fire abilties, this the reason why only they were affected. Since Caiya is a lot stronger than Clare, at least considering her Ice Orb and stuff, Clare couldn't handle the newfound power and her body overloaded when there was a trigger (the lack of Caio). This caused her to momentarily sap her energy when she used Caiya's stronger freezing attack. Similarly, though offscreen, Leo was asking Daniel where he could find Larry and Luke. Daniel said he didn't know, and Leo, with the trigger of not being able to hang onto Larry and Luke like he does in 20xK, freaked out and he overloaded with Kaxo's powers.
Vezo and Nameless Birdon #2's eternal struggle of sitting atop one of each other is one of my favorite moments from this crossover. I just love his triumphant smirk when he climbs on the frozen Birdon.
I'll admit, the fight with Daisy was purely to get in a new action scene, since the last traditional fight scene we even saw was in Jetting Across The Ice. However, it does show Keito's impulsiveness again. He could've easily asked Shat'l for answers, but he had this idea and immediately went with it rather than thinking things through.
During the battle scene, I looked over earlier battle scenes from both Kirby Adventure and 20 Times Kirby to get an idea on how both characters would fight. I found that Keito seemed to have the strange strategy of staying in place and firing constant attacks at his opponent, as shown in The Beginning... and Escape! Daisy, on the other hand, didn't have many fight scenes to look at. The only one that really showed much of her fighting was in Xiaolin Showdown, and even then, it didn't really give her much in the way of strategy. I did however use what I could, and made her use the same move in this fight that she did in Xiaolin Showdown (Beam Blast). Keito using his stronger lightning was an attack he hasn't been seen using since the fight with Galacta Knight, but I want to have him start using it more.
Hali's interruption was so that the fight wouldn't drag on too long, and I also wanted to show her being more... director-like, I guess? I don't know, I just did.
I'm not sure how fast Daisy would be able to learn that complex lightning attack, but apparently she can do so very fast while Keito isn't even speaking to her.
Having Daisy and Dana stay behind allowed me to focus more on newer characters without having the group delayed by weaker and less adventurous characters. Plus, I wanted Daisy to remodel the unseen Divisions B, C, and D bases. I wanted this so that when I finally show those Divisions and they have better bases, it would make more sense, since Division A had a somewhat crappy base until Kaaby.
I added the Squeaker into Grace's introduction because of her muteness. I needed something to be talking, so I substituted in a random enemy. Well, sort of random. The idea of the Squeak Squad returning was a way of saying, 'hey, it seems Spinni followed Gigi's advice and now the Squad is getting back together!'. And then, of course, the first rule about Squeak Squad is that you don't talk about Squeak Squad. Red Squeaker here broke that rule, tried to amend his mistake, and got a knife to the face for his troubles.
Grace was really easy to write for, since she's essentially Shadik with bombs.
That's a scary thought.
Yan wasn't really used all too much, but I feel like I used him enough. More than Leo, at least. I don't know, it just seemed that after the thing with Grace and the Squeaker, I didn't really have anything for Yan to do. However, during later segments, I showed Yan not being surprised by things like Shadik shadow jumping into the group. In fact, he even jumped out of the way before it happened. Maybe he DOES have ninja intuition.
The comic with Shadik and Grace just had to happen. No chance of it NOT happening.
Bringing everyone into the Division A base was almost a way of me just looking over every member of the Squad (minus the characters in Gigi's dimension, Meliai, and Hali). Plus, I really need to use Aika more. Fanhal, too.
Also, don't know if anyone noticed, but Ryka gave Yan her soda. Now what could that possibly mean?
The puppy-dog eyes comic actually caused a bit of trouble with Gigi. I just modified it yesterday to add two new panels, and I think it works much better now. I really just added a greater time lapse so that it doesn't seem as weird for Daisy to immediately throw herself at Grace's feet with a mere glance at the eyes.
Daniel and Leo's introductions were sort of thrown together and almost a bit rushed due to time constraints. I knew that I wanted to have the 20xK Kirbies to have a few comics as one big group, since that was missing from the segment so far, and I also knew when the Kirbies would be sent back. I was running low on time, which is why Leo got such little screen time.
The precious comic was an idea thought up very early on in the crossover, but I wasn't actually going to use it. What can I say, sometimes the silliest ideas are the best!
The comic with Daniel and Keito is probably my favorite in the entire crossover. The hypocrisy that Daniel shows is just so hilarious to me, and even though it probably wasn't the best writing for Daniel, I still think of that comic as one of my all-time best.
I'm ashamed to admit I only noticed the Burnin' Leo-Leo the Kirby name connection until making Part 33.
I like how in Part 34, Grace and Yan seem to know that Shadik is about to arrive. They just have a sixth sense or something.
Part 35, with all of the Kirbies, allowed me to use some of the Kirbies from earlier in the segment, and I enjoyed the group dynamic that I hadn't touched upon yet in the segment. Before, the new Kirbies were mostly interacting with my own Kirbies. This is the only time in the segment where the entire comic they interact with themselves only, and I enjoyed getting to do that.
I liked doing Part 36, with all of the individual goodbyes. Since they all first appeared at different times, I wanted to have them leave at different times too. It felt like a fitting end to me using them.
Shat'l's message to Daisy was actually straight from the creator herself, Gigi19972010. Shat'l IS a psychic after all, and he can see into other dimensions. I'd be on the lookout in 20 Times Kirby for new machines that Daisy creates. While I may myself not know exactly what the quote is referring to, Gigi sure does, and Shat'l does too.
Bringing my own Kirbies back was a bit weird, to be honest. I wasn't quite sure what to do with them now that I had them back, especially after some of the escapades that they got into during their stay. Kaxo, especially, was difficult. Due to some unfortunate characterization issues that he went through that I'm just kinda not gonna talk in detail about (I've already done that enough, it's caused enough problems.), I wasn't sure how to write Kaxo. No, the whole not-Kaxo idea wasn't a spur of the moment thing. The next segment was what was originally going to be after Divison Addition, and the idea is still exactly the same. The clone thing was and is developed already. It was only a matter of which character would be replaced with a clone. I hadn't really decided yet, but due to the characterization issues, I was somewhat forced to have it be a not-Kaxo instead of a not-anyone else. Either way, now that I've caught back up to the present, see you guys next time in the next segment! I'm not sure if I'll still be doing the same schedule (or perhaps a better thing to say is TRYING to do the same schedule) but who knows at this point. The next segment, I will say though, it's going to be a DOOZY.
I'm Ultimate Yoshi, and I'm signing out for now. Hope you all enjoyed the crossover. For once, I actually fully enjoyed a segment in this chapter. That's a good sign.

Panel 6: I see what you did there. xD
Also, I like how Caiya slept through the whole thing.
Also also, is there any hope for Yoshi & Kirby?

Read that huge wall of text
I see your "improved" http://kirbysadventure.smackjeeves.com/comics/1687143/such-an-odd-eight-part-29/
I didn't even notice that the last fight scene was in Jetting Across the Ice!
LOL. Grace being a Shadik with bombs. Well, she can't shadow jump…that's for sure. And she can't loop-hole through a barrier (generalization)
I was hoping for such a comic with both of them "interacting." Agreed, it HAD TO HAPPEN!
I did enjoy Daniel's intro. Keito had it comin' though.
Part 35…ninja intuition, sure. Grace…familiarity, or in this case similarity, breeds that sort of transcendental sense. That or the feeling that someone powerful will appear. OR Shat'l just talked to 'em via telepathy. *shrugs*
Would've been interesting to see a not-Caiya. XD

Wait, so was that not-Kaxo in Pumpkin Grand in the beginning?! Or did he somehow come from the 20tk dimension? Oh well, I guess we'll find out... I get the feeling the next chapter is going to be epic...GummyBears101,

I understood the thing about Dana, I even said "The only thing that quite disturbed me was when she was calmed down easily, but since I don't think something out there would be able to calm her down, I don't see it as a big problem. And later, to help with it, she fainted of desperation, which was quite fitting.". And I also commented when Ryka gave Yan the soda, don't you remember? :P
And feels like you got this thing of writing walls of text at the end of chapters from me, eh? xP

"(I've already done that enough, it's caused enough problems.)"
I just went through Gigi's side of the crossover again, and apart from you mentioning that Larry needed mental help, I didn't see any "problems" over there...

"Just close your eyes and make it all go away."
...I think you took that a lil' too far, Kirby.
