Finally, finally finally finally finally FINALLY, The Beginning... is over. Finished. This took way too long to complete.
Hopefully this story satisfied the interests of you, the readers.
I understand some of you may be upset over the death of Keeby, but it doesn't matter. I don't make this comic to please anybody, I make this comic because I enjoy making comics.
Now that I'm done with this segment, I think I'm gonna ramble on about the concepts and creation of this whole story. Why? Because I feel this is the first segment that actually DESERVES to be talked about in depth. So, I shall begin now, and those who don't care can just skip ahead to the 'Post a Comment' button.
Okay, first thing to say: I was truly surprised at how well this story came out. The basic idea of a KAS backstory wasn't even mine, like I said at the start of Meet The KAS. 100th fan KingCorp mentioned it as a story he'd like to see in his review of Kirby Adventure. So I took that idea and started making a basic concept of what would happen.
I knew for certain that almost all of the main members of the Squad would show up at one point in the story; it made sense to have them all have met before the Squad was formed. Beforehand though, the only one he knew was Hali. Hali and Kirby's friendship before the Squad was formed was there since I made Hali a character, way back in Average Days. When I made her Member Profile, the second time I tried making cast pages, I hinted that they knew each other beforehand. This was helped by Kirby's knowledge of Hali's name, while others simply call her Director.
Hali and Kirby's relationship also was inspired by CBS television show NCIS. In fact, a lot of stuff, like Shadik being a liason agent, was inspired by NCIS. In NCIS, one of the main characters, Special Agent Gibbs, once had a love relationship with the second director in the series, Director Jenny Shepard, before she was director. This relationship between Shepard and Gibbs inspired Hali and Kirby's relationship greatly. But now I'm straying way too far away.
Since Kirby and Hali knew each other, obviously putting Hali into the story was a necessity. Some of you said Hali was a lot different in the past than in the present. Truthfully, she actually isn't that different. The main difference is that now, she's a director, and so she can't be saying stuff like 'Oooh, burn.' without kinda screwing up protocol. She has to act more mature while on the job. Off the job, she tends to stop acting like this and goes back to the way she acted in this segment.
The next character I placed here was Keeby himself. I didn't know what I was going to be doing with him, aside from that Keeby was gonna die somehow. A necessity, I might add. Keeby isn't in the present, so by adding him into this story, it produced a lot of speculation as to why Keeby wasn't there. The statement made by him in the 1 year anniversary bonus comic, "I don't exist in the present" , was never to be taken seriously. Nothing there was. And yet it got lots of people correctly thinking Keeby was going to die. Unintentional, but I suppose it still all worked out.
Since I knew Keeby had to die, I started thinking of ways he COULD. I figured Keeby making a heroic sacrifice would work, and Keeby saving Kirby was the obvious choice. This in turn led to Kirby's arrogance factor. And that led to Keeby's protective nature.
After the Dark Nebula incident in Kirby: Squeak Squad (or Mouse Attack), Kirby starting being more arrogant about his skills. I figured this would be a good route to go, because since it would provide a good character moment when Kirby finally realized he was NOT the strongest thing in the universe, and could actually need help.
Though truthfully, I may have overdid his arrogance by making him give himself the nickname 'Legendary Kirby'.
The idea to have The True Arena be in the mix came to me once I started the segment. I needed a way to get Kirby into a fight that could be very difficult for him, and so the True Arena became the best solution: with all the fights and challenges, I could definitely make one too difficult for Kirby to handle. The subgame's infamy would certainly make fans start to wonder what would happen. And that was exactly what I wanted.
With the following comics, I was able to set a timeframe for when this occured. In Part 4, we can see Kirby defeating King Dedede. What's important here is that Dedede has his jet hammer with him, and you can see his mask being broken apart. So I was able to place this right after Revenge of the King. Next comic, Kirby is seen training on Rocky. In this comic, before Shadow Kirby shows up, Rocky states "If The True Arena is anything like Helper To Hero, you're going to need it", or something like that. I'm too lazy to check. So then I was able to place this after both Revenge of the King and Helper to Hero. I was very happy about that.
We also got to see that the Kirby Adventure Squad base for Division A wasn't always what it is now. Something that I just thought I should add in.
The idea for Shadow Kirby to come up was also thought up at the last minute, really. But it also made sense. I mentioned Shadow in Meet The KAS, but now was the first time we got to see him. His personality was essentially Kirby's future personality and Keeby's personality combined. But I needed a reason for him to suddenly show up, so then the idea of Kirby training Shadik came to mind, since I knew I wanted the majority of the main cast to appear. So this was the perfect opportunity.
I greatly enjoyed letting the characters meet for the first time, as shown by Kirby and Shadik's first meet. It also allowed me to crack some jokes before getting serious with the fighting that would occur in the second half of this segment. Something I greatly appreciated.
The Float Islands Training Center place appeared as a whim, after I pulled that little silly comic with Kirby looking like he was gonna shoot Shadik out of a cannon. I needed heads of the Center right after I created the place itself, so then Syzmi and Tazmi were born. This also gave me the opportunity to reference my other comic, Yoshi & Kirby, with the 'manavalavara' thingy. Unfortunately, not all of you understood what the heck that was, so suffice it to say that was nowhere near my best joke. It was just a little silly jab at the comic that hadn't updated in forever, and it also created the bonus fact that I hadn't forgotten about Yoshi & Kirby.
Syzmi and Tazmi created another opening for a member of Division A, so I went with one of my favorites, Keito. I had Keito and Shadik leave the scene to simply make some more jokes. While that was going on, Kirby asked Tazmi if he could train Shadik for him, so that Kirby could get back to his own training so Keeby didn't nag him some more. This was shown to have happened off-screen when in Part 15, Shadow says that Kirby and Tazmi trained Shadik. I'm not certain if anyone actually picked that up, though.
The reason for the cut from the Training Center to the True Arena was simply because of what part it was. I wanted the Beginning to have only around 30 parts, and I wanted the serious stuff to start happening right around the halfway point. So it did.
A lot of the fighting was straightforward, but it did give me more opportunities for Kirbies in Division A. Kaxo would not be left out of this tournament, so I made him Kirby's second major fight. Keito became Kirby's first major fight because I wanted a face that was seen already, and Keito was the way to go, simply because it made sense. Since he was a new trainee at the Training Center, it made sense to have him have gone there to train for the True Arena.
The fight with Keito also allowed me to show how Kirby got his Sword Stored Ability. Just something I chose to add, since you guys were probably wondering how exactly he got it in the first place.
Keeby meeting Raize in the bleachers of the stadium went very well. The pairing was great, for the two personalities went well together. Raize managed to get Keeby to just accept that Kirby was going through with this. If Galacta Knight hadn't shown up, Raize and Keeby would have definitely been good friends afterwards.
Also, I randomly threw in Caiya just for the fact that I needed her here for the upcoming fight.
Shadik fighting Meta Knight worked out well, because I didn't really have anyone else left to go to, so Meta Knight's addition in Part 15 became a great way to have someone recognizable fight Shadik. This fight was important mostly because it allowed me to show how Shadik fought.
Galacta Knight's arrival was thought up around the time of Part 16 or so. I still needed some character to kill Keeby, and I was thinking about it for a good long while. Once I decided upon Galacta Knight, I started to think of ways he could actually get there.
Originally, Galacta was going to have received an invite to the tournament, and then he was gonna have mercilessly fought Kirby. When it came time to have Galacta appear though, I changed the plan and just had Galacta crash the whole event.
The crystal was placed in to make a good interruption. Made from custom Pix sprites, I think it worked out very well. Galacta's appearance was so well timed with the remaining segments, since I wanted this segment to end before July, so I could get started on the next segment at that time.
Galacta Knight became much more serious a character than he originally was going to be, but I am very pleased with the outcome. Now that I had all the pieces set in place, I started showing Galacta's prowess and might. Defeating Shadik in a single blow was all the proof you guys needed that Galacta meant business.
When Kirby faced Galacta, it allowed me to delve into Galacta's backstory a bit more. It also showed even more how serious Galacta was; he was able to go on a tangent about the mysterious mages that sealed him away while still paying attention to the fight and even winning the fight.
All the Kirbies shown so far joining together to assist Kirby became a great moment for this segment, especially since it was never planned. It also allowed me to show Saia as the official medic and healer for the True Arena. Her pacifist nature unfortunately prevented her from assisting in the fight.
The Galactic Storm attack was the last-minute thing I figured out on how specifically to kill Keeby. It also worked perfectly with Shadik being awesome; he single-handedly saved almost everybody from being killed from the blast, using his Shadow Jump. I specifically managed to position everybody so that Keeby and Kirby were on one side, and everyone else was on the other side, with Shadik to save them.
The ending where Kirby kills Galacta Knight felt a bit rushed to me, but I'm still happy with how it came out. Now, with this comic, we get the actual formation of the KAS in grayscale format. I felt grayscale was necessary because it just went and showed everyone that it was a flashback, for those who actually forgot.
As for the reason Keeby had to die, it just helped shape Kirby's personality. I knew that Keeby dying would give Kirby the reason to form the Squad; to Kirby, it was honoring Keeby's memory, and his mission to help those in need. Kirby was certainly in need, and yet Kirby was too arrogant to listen to Keeby. Kirby felt he needed to amend that best he could, so he went with the Squad idea. It also gave Kirby a reason to be so protective over his friends in the present, like when he was merciless towards Talzo for trying to kill Hali. Kirby doesn't want to have others suffer because of him, so he makes certain nothing like Keeby's death could happen to any of his other friends. Makes sense, right?
Oh, and the reason Shat'l barely appeared at all was because originally Kirby was going to have lost the fight with Galacta Knight, and one of the others instead killed Galacta. Eventually I changed that, but what does that have to do with Shat'l? Because in Meet The KAS, Shat'l says that Kirby had never lost a fight. If in my original plans, Kirby was going to lose, why would Shat'l have said that? Because Shat'l said before that, "To my KNOWLEDGE, Kirby has never lost a fight". Shat'l wasn't going to be present for the fight because I liked the red herring that that gave. Fans knew Kirby wasn't going to lose, because Shat'l said that. Not a single person made the 'to my knowledge' connection. Of course, all that was redundant since Kirby technically still won anyway.
OKAY, I'M DONE. RAISE YOUR HAND IF YOU ACTUALLY READ ANY OF THAT.

*raises hand* I read all of it, it was very interesting, and I enjoyed it.
Anyways, about the comic itself, not much to say here, but a very nice way to wrap up the segment.
I'd say perfect timing, as the cross-over with Kirby's Dream Adventure will start tomorrow.

But I still can't believe Keeby's...gone. He was one of my favorite characters. Maybe instead of killing him, you could have just made him get seriously hurt. Then he wouldn't have to die and Kirby would still stop being arrogant (spelling?).Tygah (Guest),

So...Did Meta Knight die? And would you ever consider Keeby having an appearance as a ghost Kirby? Even if it's just a minor appearance?Fighter Dee (Guest),

What is really interesting, and made me "O.O" is that the way you make your comics, it is EXACTLY THE WAY I DO. REALLY, I'M NOT KIDDING. And most of your ideas are the same as mines. A lot of times a have one idea but I'll just use it really later and then you come with almost the same idea before I can even use it. I don't understand... Anyways, one thing I think you missed in this chapter is the fact it was a flashback, Kirby was telling it. Sometimes you showed things that Kirby didn't see, so how can he know them? And also, when Kirby said about Keeby's death, he even didn't cryed (in the present). If your best friend dies, and he sacrificed himself to save you, if you tell someone about this, you'll say like "He died saving me. Yeah..." ? Anyways, I'd do that if I was making something like that, showing the emotions of my characters, but it's just my opinion. Oh, and sorry about the long comment. ^^Ultimate Yoshi,

The reason some things were shown that Kirby could never have seen, was because this story wasn't being shown in a flashback style. The story was being told as if the flashback was the present time. I definitely deviated from Kirby's viewpoint quite a lot, but some parts, like Keeby and Raize's talks, were necessary for the story.
Also, just because we didn't SEE Kirby cry in the present, doesn't mean he didn't. We only got to see Kirby in the present when he was finished with the story, other than that, for all we may know, he was crying when he talked about Keeby's death.[/lazyexcuse]

I actually figured out that Keeby was going to die long before you made that 1 year anniversary comic.
So... wait. I'm confused. How much of this was planned out, and how much of it was you making things up as you went along?
